Jotun NORSOK M-501 coating systems

Nor-Maali offers the Finnish and Baltic markets Jotun NORSOK M-501 corrosion protection coating systems for offshore structures. These systems have been designed in accordance with the NORSOK M-501 standard and implemented with Jotun products. Jotun has several tested and pre-approved systems with coatings that have produced excellent results.

The NORSOK M-501 standard gives the requirements for the selection of coating materials, surface preparation, application procedures and inspection for protective coatings to be applied during the construction and installation of offshore installations and associated facilities. The goal of the NORSOK M-501 system is to protect the installation with minimum need of maintenance. These coating systems have also attracted interest in other demanding industrial sites, as the Norsok M-501 system 1 fulfills the requirements of ISO 12944-9 CX.

The NORSOK standards are developed by the Norwegian petroleum industry to ensure adequate safety, value adding and cost effectiveness for petroleum industry developments and operations. The project, launched in 1994, also included the development of a standard for coatings for offshore structures. The new standard was intended to replace the oil company specifications and harmonize practices and coating systems used. The result of the work was the standard NORSOK M-501: Surface preparation and protective coating. In addition to paints, the standard covers metallic coatings and application of spray-on passive fire protective coatings.

In the NORSOK M-501 standard, coating systems are divided into nine groups according to the application. Each group is presented with a system examples and the requirements it must meet. These coating systems are suitable for both offshore structures and other structures intended for demanding conditions, where the products are required to have a long service life and excellent corrosion properties. Norsok M-501 projects require a Frosio certificate from the inspector. Nor-Maali is also able to provide technical support and inspection services for these projects.
