From Nor-Maali for Finnish and Baltic markets Jotun NORSOK M-501 corrosion protection coating systems for offshore structures. These systems are designed in accordance with the NORSOK M-501 standard and implemented with Jotun products.
The NORSOK M-501 standard outlines the requirements for the selection of coating materials, surface preparation, application procedures and inspection for protective coatings to be applied during the construction and installation of offshore installations and associated facilities. The goal of the NORSOK M-501 system is to protect the installation with minimum need of maintenance. These coating systems have also attracted interest in other demanding industrial sites as well since the NORSOK M-501 system 1 fulfills the requirements of ISO 12944-9 CX.
The NORSOK standards are developed by the Norwegian petroleum industry to ensure adequate safety, value adding and cost effectiveness for petroleum industry developments and operations. The project, launched in 1994, also included the development of a standard for coatings for offshore structures. The new standard was intended to replace the oil company specifications and harmonize practices and coating systems used. The result of the work was the standard NORSOK M-501: Surface preparation and protective coating. In addition to the paints the standard covers also metallic coatings and application of spray-on passive fire protective coatings.
In the NORSOK M-501 standard, coating systems are divided into nine groups, according to the application. Each group is presented with a system examples with the requirements it must meet. These coating systems are suitable for both offshore structures and as well as for structures intended for demanding conditions, where are required to have a long service life and excellent corrosion properties. Norsok M-501 projects require a Frosio certificate from the inspector. From Nor-Maali locally technical service including Frosio certified inspector services both in Finland and Baltics.
